Edinburgh ICC pioneers text guide for vision-impaired customers

Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) has produced a text guide to its facilities for blind and visually-impaired customers.

Text guides bridge the information gap for people who have difficulty using conventional layout maps by providing a navigational narrative to complement existing signposting tools.

Commenting on the launch of the EICC text guide at the VisitScotland Accessibility Tourism Conference, EICC Head of Events, Karen Wood said: “Our new text guide powers text-to-speech, large font and braille applications on computers and mobile devices and can assist delegates get to where they want to be independently and secure in the knowledge that they are following well charted routes around our facilities.”

Glasgow-based Describe Online created the EICC text guide and claims it is the first of its kind in the UK events industry, although the technology is already in use on Transport for London and National Rail services.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said: “The accessible market is potentially lucrative for Scotland’s tourism and events industries and it is fantastic to see the EICC introducing this text guide for the benefit of its blind and visually impaired customers.”

The EICC text guide is free and can be downloaded at: eicc.co.uk/accessibility.
