Custard Communications, a marketing communications agency for the hospitality industry, held the ‘Great Custard Bake-Off’ Live-Final last Friday (22 March) at The Deck at the National Theatre, London, all in the good name of Comic Relief fun-raising.
Following a game of looks, style and deliciousness in the first round where entrants were asked to concoct their most fun and fanciful creations, featuring custard as a central component, before taking a snap of the dish and uploading the image to the Custard Bake-Off Voting Gallery on Pinterest.
People were asked to ‘like’ and ‘repin’ their favourite custard creation based on their photographic appeal and the moreishness of their descriptions before the three finalists, Ricardo Menta, Executive Sous Chef at the National Theatre; Paul Jacobs, Head Chef at The Clink Restaurant at HMP High Down; and Alexandra Bertram, Account Executive at Custard Communications, battled it out to win the title of Custard King or Queen.
The panel of greedy, expert judges including Chris Underwood, Head Pastry Chef at The Five Fields; Simon Flint, Executive Chef at the National Theatre; and Custard Communications’ MD Petra Clayton, announced that the winners title had gone to Custards own Alexandra Bertram.
Her dish, The Millionaire’s Tower (layers of vanilla custard, caramel and chocolate topped off with clotted cream shortbread) took the biscuit with one judge awarding top marks for flavour.
