A new pedestrian walkway linking Edinburgh’s main West End hotels and businesses to the expanded Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) and featuring the words of author Alexander McCall Smith has been unveiled.
Etched in Jura Limestone and covering an area 30m long by three metres high, the author writes of Edinburgh: “This is a city of shifting skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again.”
Hans H Rissmann OBE, EICC Chief Executive, said: “We welcome our first international delegates to the expanded EICC in three months time and this literary gem will, I am sure, stay with them for years to come when they reflect on their time in the city.”
Unveiling the work, McCall Smith, former Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh and creator of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, said: “I was delighted and honoured to be asked by the City of Edinburgh Council and the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust if my words could be used on this prominent wall in the heart of the city.”
The new walkway named ’Ladyfield’ is a focal point shared by the EICC and Atria Edinburgh.
