Spring to bring Southport projects to fruition

North West resort and conference destination, Southport, is welcoming 2013 as a major year of change and development, with a series of big money regeneration projects coming on stream. Several other projects will also commence designed to boost the area’s infrastructure for business tourism.

The much-anticipated Atkinson development, Southport’s new Cultural Centre, is due to officially open in May. Three years in the making and situated right in the heart of the resort, the Atkinson will offer meetings, arts, event and community facilities within the historic buildings. Conferences and events for up to 600 people will be able to be accommodated in the new facility.

In addition, Travelodge will complete a £4m transformation of the previously derelict Ribble Buildings in Lord Street. This will create a 101-bed hotel, meetings and events facilities and a Frankies restaurant, a collaboration between Chef Marco Pierre White and Jockey Frankie Dettori.

In April, the resort will be getting a new Genting Casino, which will be an addition to the existing waterfront complex, which currently features the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre and adjoining Ramada Plaza hotel.

Steve Christian, Tourism Marketing and Visitor Services Manager, Southport Conferences, said: “We are very excited about the new openings planned for Southport this year as well as the new investments that are in the pipeline for the future. They represent the next phase in what has been many years of massive investment in the resort and the next step towards achieving our ambitions to establish Southport as one of the key business tourism destinations.”

He said Southport would be using this year’s International Confex in March as a platform to show off the new facilities and the resort’s stand would be offering samples of Southport Brewery’s finest ale, by way of a “toast to Southport’s future”.

Developments also continue at Southport Conferences with further work commissioned on the e-portfolio launched at Confex last year to enable it to be used with smartphones and tablets.
