Last year was momentous for us and London. We were proud to play
our part in helping to deliver a hugely successful Olympic and
Paralympic Games and now share the same ambitions as the events industry
to maximise the opportunities that they have afforded us.
year will be our busiest on record but we know that it will also be
challenging. Starting this month, we will be welcoming a large number of
world leading events from other venues, such as BETT, ICE Totally
Gaming, Plasa and Broadcast Video Expo, all of whom have seen
exceptionally strong rebook and growth of their events as a result of
moving. We will continue to support them to ensure they have the best
experience possible. It is also our strongest performance for conference
and events. We will be welcoming 20 national and international
association meetings, as well as a number of corporate events from blue
chip companies. In fact, this year we will see business from North
America form 25 per cent of our overall conference business, including
hosting the Citrix Synergy event in October.
At the beginning of the year we announced a restructure of our management team. Kevin Murphy has stepped down as Chief Executive but will be taking up a new position as Chairman.
As Chief Executive, Kevin Murphy has overseen the investment of £165m
from Excel’s owners, the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC)
to create London’s first international convention centre for London
which has enabled the Capital to move from 19th to seventh in the ICCA
(International Convention and Congress Association) rankings. Kevin also
secured a further £55m investment in opening the UK’s first Aloft hotel
with 252 beds adjoining the ICC. Since taking over as CEO Excel London
has won 50 industry awards including World’s Best Meetings and
Conference Venue at the World Travel Awards, Europe’s Best for the last
three years and every major UK venue award.
concentrate on developing and strengthening Excel London’s partnerships
with local and national government to gain greater recognition and
support for London as a global centre for Business Tourism. A board
member of London and Partners, the official promotion organisation for
London, Kevin will continue to work to attract international businesses
to meet and exhibit in the UK capital city, so that it can achieve its
aims with the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to reach number one in the
ICCA rankings and be the leading events destination in Europe. The
announcement that Excel will be host to Europe’s largest medical
meeting, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2015 is essential
in reaching this goal.
As many of you are aware, I have taken over from Kevin as Chief Executive.
The business has been transformed over the last few years into one of
the leading international venues. My ambition is to see London becomes
Europe’s meeting Capital with Excel playing a pivotal role in helping to
achieve this. I want to assure you that we will continue to invest in
Excel so that it remains a world class facility and I will continue to
work with all of you to help you deliver successful events that help you
grow and meet your long term objectives.
We have made two other
internal changes within the business so that we have the best team in
place to work with you and ensure that we meet our objectives and long
term vision. James Rees formerly Director of Sales in the Conference & Events division
and Jeremy Rees, formerly Director of Sales for exhibitions, have been
promoted to Executive Directors and will sit on the Executive team with
myself, Phil Dowson our CFO, James Mark – Executive Director and Brian
Cole – Operations Director.
I wish you all a successful year and look forward to welcoming you to Excel London.
