Five Leeds facilities have been selected as potential training venues for athletes in the build up to the London 2012 Games.
The John Charles Centre for Sport, Rothwell Leisure Centre, Headingley Carnegie Stadium, University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University all feature in a national list of over 600 venues that form a Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. The Guide was given to international Olympic teams during the Beijing Games in 2008.
Councillor John Procter, Chair of the Leeds Cultural Partnership, said: “We now have some of the finest sports facilities in the region here in Leeds, and the fact that they are thought worthy of hosting some of the finest sports people in the world is something as a city we should be very proud of.
“It would be fantastic to be able to attract a range of countries and sports teams to Leeds as they build up to 2012, which is sure to be a historic event for the whole nation to enjoy and support.”
The Chinese Athletics Association will base its Olympic team at Leeds Metropolitan University, the city will also host athletes from the USA, Serbia and Holland,
The Leeds 2012 Task Group was set up to ensure the city contributes to delivering a successful Games. “The Games present the potential to raise the city’s international profile and improve health and community cohesion,” a spokesman said.
