The Edinburgh International Convention Centre (EICC) claims it is on track to open its new event space in 2013 and has begun a one-year countdown to launch.
EICC secured £85m in funding from the City of Edinburgh Council in 2010 for its expansion plans, including £30m for a new 2,000sqm, multi-purpose event facility. Work commenced on the new Lennox Suite in July 2010 and is due to be completed in January 2013.
A major selling point for the new space is its moving floor system, which can turn 360 degrees and is separated into three sections, allowing event organisers to use the whole or parts of the space for different types of events.
Head of Sales and Marketing Louise Andrew told CN the Lennox Suite has moved into its internal fit out phase, with three parts of the moving floor now in place and operational.
“This turntable flooring gives organiser the option of holding events in the heart of Edinburgh city while still driving in articulated lorries,” she said. The function space also has a clear span tension wire grid ceiling and is connected to the existing EICC facility.
Alongside the new hall, the expansion project will see the EICC gain a new atrium foyer leading to an atrium café, plus a number of breakout rooms and a large bar, which doubles up as a registration area. New kitchens have also been installed, which Andrew claimed were second in size only to those being used for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The aim of the new high-tech space was to provide flexible, high-tech spaces to event and conference organisers, she said.
Andrew also confirmed the EICC has already secured new association and corporate events business up to 2018 as a result of its expansion. New events are from both local and international organisers. She hoped to secure two major association events plus a range of major events annually.
EICC gets the keys to the new space in January 2013 but will spend another couple of months testing before opening. The venue showed off its new event space during the IMEX show in Frankfurt and at International Confex earlier this month.
