Corporate Social Responsibility consideration in RFPs

So the RFP season draws to
a close, and one thing that has become increasingly apparent, aside from the
ever present pressure on corporate spend, is just how important a consideration
corporate social responsibility and the environment has become in the
procurement process.

Before the financial
crisis took hold in 2008, it was a hot topic but it seemed for a while that it
had taken back seat to rate and added value. But in today’s climate of social responsibility, it has become a key
consideration of the tender process.

I’m proud of the fact
that the Macdonald Manchester was highly commended in the Business Tourism
category at last year’s Manchester Tourism Awards. In the past couple of years, we have
implemented a number of initiatives which will have
a real impact on making our business more and more sustainable. I’m confident that it’s these actions which
we have taken which led to our accolade.

The initiatives we are
taking at hotel level are part of a much larger, group-wide initiative called Room 15, which is entrenched across
Macdonald Hotels and which all of my fellow general managers are fully
committed to.

Quite simply, it’s a
charter of 15 commitments which all hotels in the group are obliged to achieve
by the year 2015. Each hotel has
appointed an Environmental Champion to oversee progress, and the aim is for
Macdonald Hotels to be recognised as one of the leading sustainable hotel groups
in the UK.

At
my hotel, we will reduce our electricity consumption by at least 15 per cent between
now and 2015 through the installation of LED lighting.

We have also invested a
huge amount of money in an appliance which converts waste food into waste
water, therefore helping us to achieve our target of zero operational waste to
landfill by 2015.  By then, 100 per cent of our
hotel amenities will be produced locally and we continue to encourage our top
suppliers to share our sustainability ambitions.

We can only predict what
the future may hold, but I am excited to be part of an organisation which is
committed to doing business responsibly and which can confidently meet the ever
growing demands of corporate buyers.
