Croydon, in South East London, has launched a new convention bureau.
Destination Croydon is a Croydon Business Improvement District (BID) project. Croydon BID will facilitate it as well as part-fund it, alongside some of the town’s principal hotel and conference venues.
Other members include Croydon College, Croydon Conference Centre, Croydon Park Hotel, Fairfield Halls, Holiday Inn Express, Jurys Inn and the Lansdowne Hotel.
Croydon BID’s Chairman Max Menon told CN: “In conjunction with other key stakeholders, Croydon BID is leading on a wide range of initiatives to improve safety and security in Croydon town centre to increase its appeal and to counter negative, and often unfair, perceptions of it.
“Businesses recognise that working together and combining their marketing and promotional efforts, can help to put Croydon firmly on the conference circuit map while at the same time helping them to maximise their potential to secure conference, event and accommodation bookings.”
Referring to the riots that hit the town last summer Menon said: “Many other areas were hit by the public disturbances on a similar or worse scale. One of the positives to have come out of last summer’s disturbances is a renewed vigour among the local community to work together to restore confidence and progress in the town and this has been supported by a wave of additional marketing activity led by the BID in conjunction with Croydon Council and other key partners in order to support the town’s recovery. In addition London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson has recognised Croydon as an Opportunity Area, pledging £23m of additional funding for regeneration.”
