The UK’s largest supermarket chain Tesco has signed up to be the Gold
Sponsor for WorldPride 2012 in London next year. The company joins
Headline Sponsor Smirnoff as top tier supporters of the event.
Pride London, the largest Gay Pride event in the UK,
is set to host the one-day parade through London’s streets with related
events. After the parade the events space will this year extend from
Oxford Street in the north to Shaftsbury Avenue in the south including
the return of Leicester Square.
Tesco has pledged a significant
sum and committed to running an area for families for the event. The
funding will make a contribution towards the £800,000 cost of running
the event, helping to ensure that it remains entirely free for those
attending, unlike other Pride events around the UK which have opted to
introduce an element of charging for attendance.
Tesco has over 2,700 stores in the UK and operations in 14 countries, employing over 492,000 people.
very pleased to be sponsoring WorldPride 2012, following our extremely
successful presence at Pride London 2011,” said CEO of Retailing
Services at Tesco, Andrew Higginson. “Tesco is the UK’s largest private
employer, and a very diverse international organisation where everybody
is welcome. Our Out at Tesco team will be working closely with Pride
London to ensure next year’s event is even more a fun.”
2012 will be used to draw attention to the fact that within the
Commonwealth alone there are still 41 countries where homosexuality is
illegal with punishments ranging from imprisonment to the death penalty.
“We’re expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors from all
over the world to join us so we really want to put on the greatest Pride
ever to really show what Pride means in London,” said Chair of Pride
London, Paul Birrell. “The parade is going to bigger, bolder and longer
than ever before.”
WorldPride parade will take place on 7 July
2012. Full details of the events, stages and acts taking part in next
year’s event will be released during the 274 days between now and the
event taking place.
