Naming rights sponsor for new SECC national arena confirmed

Scottish Hydro has acquired naming rights for the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre’s (SECC) new national arena.

The
new Scottish Hydro Arena is due to open in Spring 2013 and plans to
host music, entertainment, sporting and cultural events. Under the new
partnership, Scottish Hydro is committing to investing £1.5m per year
over the next 10 years into the new venue.

The new arena will have a
seating capacity of 12,000 and aims to house 140 events annually with up
to 1m visitors. It is being designed by Foster and Partners and has the
potential to inject £131m into the local economy, SECC claims.

“The
Scottish Hydro Arena is a significant investment for us and shows the
strength of our commitment to Scotland,” Scottish and Southern Energy
(SSE) chief executive Ian Marchant said. “We’ve supported music events
that people have enjoyed for some time and, now we’re involved on a
larger stage, it means we can bring the experience to many more people.”

SECC
chief executive John Sharkey said both parties wanted to position
Glasgow and Scotland at the forefront of the global events and
entertainment industry.

“To be partnering with a successful and
established FTSE top 30 UK brand with Scottish roots is part of our
commitment to working with the best in the business,” he added.
