Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa guests evacuated from sauna fire

Two hundred guests were evacuated from the Lake District Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa in Cumbria in the early hours of this morning after a fire broke out in the sauna room.

Five Cumbria Fire Service fire engines were called to the Bowness-on-Windermere hotel at 7.45am this morning after a fire alarm was triggered in the sauna area of the hotel spa. A spokesperson for the Cumbria Fire Service told Conference News no one was injured and although there are still fire brigade personnel on scene, the fire had been extinguished.

“The safety of our guests is our top priority and hotel staff carried out a full evacuation of the property,” a spokesperson for Macdonald Hotels and Resorts told CN. “We can confirm no guests have been harmed.

“The fire service attended and we are undertaking a full investigation to confirm the cause of the fire in line with our established health and safety procedures.”
The spokesperson said guests remained outside the property until the fire service carried out its initial investigation and confirmed the hotel was safe to return to.
“It is too early at this stage to comment on damage to the property, although our initial inspection suggests the fire was contained with minimal lasting damage,” the spokesperson added.

The hotel has four meeting rooms and a conference suite with a capacity of 160 delegates.
