Stretford catering students get The Point

Lancashire County Cricket Club’s new £12m, 1,00-seat conference and events centre at Old Trafford, The Point has been giving local students a taste of hospitality catering.
Key Stage 4 food technology students from Stretford High School recently took part in cookery demonstrations and met Executive Head Chef Nic Ashurst who gave them a health and safety brief before kitting them out in their chef whites.
The students decorated cup cakes and prepared vegetables before Ashurst demonstrated how to sear the fish and meat.
Stretford High School’s Head of Technology Anne Jackson said the visit had been a real eye opener. “This is the first opportunity they have had to see how a commercial kitchen operates and they returned to school very enthusiastic about their experience,” she said.
Ashurst said he was impressed by how the students took to the task. “It can be quite daunting cooking on a range as large as ours and they coped very well and are a credit to their school,” he said.
The visit was part of an association between LCCC and Stretford High School that will lead to further departments and their students visiting over the coming months.
