Scarborough Spa Grand reopens with Bolshoi bang

The £6.5m refurbishment of Scarborough Spa’s historic Grand Hall has been completed ahead of schedule and the town celebrated with a relaunch event, last week, featuring the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra.

The extensive refurbishment saw a major redevelopment of the Grade II listed Victorian concert hall, reception areas and offices, as well as the upgrading of the communication systems and technical equipment. The venue is one of the largest multi-purpose conference venues on the North East coast. And the Grand Hall’s stage area has been enlarged and now includes an access lift for stage sets.

The excavation of the Grand Hall’s new basement turned up plenty of evidence of the site’s rich heritage which dates to the discovery of the spa waters there in 1667.

The new management area in the caretaker’s cottage has been open since March and the team is keen to market what it calls “a more versatile conference experience”. The remodeling means the Grand Hall can be reconfigured in a significant shorter time.

Jo Ager, Spa Sales Development Manager, said: “It is very exciting to see the results of all the hard work.  We have a very busy year ahead and it is fantastic that we can now offer an even better experience at the Spa for the local community, visitors and business clients.”

The Scarborough Spa refurbishment follows the remodelling of the York Barbican Centre where an upgraded auditorium can now host conferences of up to 1,400 delegates, withbreakout spaces and foyer areas.

York and Scarborough Conferences launched a new Ambassador Programme recently. It was rolled out in York initially with 20 University of York Ambassadors recruited and will be followed up in Scarborough.

The localconference bureau, York & Scarborough Conferences, recently attracted 60industry buyers to a venue showcase at York Racecourse with 50 exhibitors also participating.
