World and European Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis, the face of the London 2012 Olympics, has been flying the flag for her home city Sheffield during the SportAccord International Convention in London.
Representatives from the sporting world were invited by Marketing Sheffield and Welcome to Yorkshire to hear a live chat with the star at the Park Plaza County Hall. During the session, Ennis spoke about her hopes for 2012 and sang the praises of Sheffield’s sporting prowess and its facilities.
“It’s a massive honour to be involved in the Games,” she said. “Missing out on the last Olympics makes me appreciate 2012 even more.”
Jessica has recently become a brand ambassador for Sheffield: “I was brought up in Sheffield, studied in Sheffield and started my career in Sheffield. I received offers to go elsewhere, such as scholarships in America, but for me I couldn’t see why I should leave Sheffield.”
Sheffield has been chosen as a 2012 training camp for the US Diving, Serbia Olympic Committee and Brazilian Judo teams and also plays host to the British Diving, Table Tennis, Boxing and Volleyball teams.
Brendan Moffett, Director of Marketing Sheffield, said: “Sheffield has positioned itself as a leading UK sporting destination which is already starting to pay dividends – boasting the largest programme of sports events during 2011 than the city has ever seen.
“However, it is important for Sheffield to stay ahead of the game. Attending the SportAccord International Convention is vital in order for the city to access and influence sporting bodies and key decision-makers – capitalising on the attention that Jessica Ennis creates in her role as a Sheffield Brand Ambassador.
“Sheffield’s 2011 sports programme is expected to benefit the city’s economy by £6m.”
