International buyers ‘discover’ Cambridge

VisitBritain’s Discovery11 programme not only
boosted the number of international hosted buyers at International Confex last
week, but put many in touch with conference bureaus around the UK for
a taste of the regions.

Conference Cambridge hosted a group as part of a two-day
visit to the East of England.

The buyers toured Queens’ College, the
Crowne Plaza’s new conference suite, Emmanuel College and had a brief ‘walking’
lunch.

Conference Cambridge organiser of the visit Judith Sloane
welcomed the opportunity to showcase the university’s meetings facilities. “Our
visitors left with a very favourable impression of the city and I hope that they
will be able to bring their events to us in the not too distant future,” she
said.

A prize draw resulted in Kata Boros from OTP
Travel, Hungary, winning a
weekend for two at the Crowne Plaza together with a champagne punt tour
and two tickets for a King’s College Chapel tour.

The five-day Discovery programme attracted 100 buyers from 20 markets. Ninety suppliers took part in the
Discovery workshop, according to VisitBritain which estimated this resulted in
2,500 appointments with buyers.

“While we are currently
preparing a formal evaluation report, the feedback from both suppliers and
buyers has been very positive so far, with some suppliers confirming that new
event business was being won as a result of taking part in Discovery,”  Nathan
Alemany, Manager – eventBritain, VisitBritain, tells Conference
