Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) Liverpool is to build a new 8,100sqm events and exhibition extension on its King’s Dock waterfront site.
News of the £40m development plan was first announced in CN last February. Now those plans have passed the Council, whose leader announced the go-ahead at a press conference at ACC Liverpool, on 21 March.
The new facility is scheduled to open in September 2014. Council leader Joe Anderson announced the Council’s backing of the plan as “great news for the city”. He added: “A new state-of-the-art exhibition hall will enhance the excellent waterfront facilities of the Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre, making Liverpool a top UK venue for events and conferences.”
The new complex will be wholly owned by the City Council and managed by ACC Liverpool. It will be used to stage both trade and consumer exhibitions, as well as large scale conferences with attached exhibitions, large scale banquets and concerts for up to 10,000 people.
The extension will include a 200-bedroom hotel on site and will connect to the existing facilities by sky bridge. The Council believes the new complex can host 50 events in its first year and attract 250,000 visitors.
Chairman of ACC Liverpool David McDonnell said feasibility work undertaken demonstrated the development would be self-funding and “begin to attract millions of pounds of new business to the city as soon as it opens”.
ACC Liverpool Chief Executive Bob Prattey said: “We have already proved that Liverpool is an attractive and compelling destination for conference and exhibition organisers. The new venue will enable us to build market share and to attract even larger and more lucrative events.”
A planning application will be submitted in March 2012, with work likely to start on site in early 2013. The project could eventually support 1,300 jobs.
“ACC Liverpool has created significant employment in the North West region with an associated economic impact estimated at over £400m since opening in January 2008,” Prattey noted.
