Robot visitor assistant makes its debut in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi
National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) unveiled its secret robot weapon at the big
International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2011). The 2011-REEM is a
robot visitor assistant at the ADNEC centre.

Its job is to be a guide and
greeter and it provided a personalised greeting service to VIPs at the
10th edition of IDEX when the event opened at ADNEC,
20 February.

ADNEC
believes it is the first live events venue to trial such a robot initiative and
the centre’s MD, His Excellency Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, said he was
“delighted” to be able to trial REEM during IDEX 2011.

REEM is a 1.65m
prototype produced by Abu Dhabi-based PAL Robotics (PAL Group). It has a mobile
base that enables the robot to move at 5kph and is powered by lithium batters.
It has a motorised head with face-recognition functions. The robot has sensors
and a multimedia touchscreen that can
offer information in various formats, as well as the ability to speak to a
helpdesk attendant via video conference.
