London gets ready to showcase to 125 international buyers

Mayor of London Boris Johnson
today welcomed the 125 international
event buyers due to attend the VisitBritain and Visit London showcase, 27
February-3 March, claiming the
capital was “the world’s greatest city to do business in”.

“Business tourism is vital to
our economy and up to and beyond the 2012 Games we want to show that that London is not just a city
of discovery but a city of fantastic opportunity,” the Mayor
added.

The buyers are being flown in
from 30 countries as part of Discovery 2011, a joint familiarisation trip being supported
by the UK’s
promotional tourism bodies.

Visit London and South East
England will host the first stage of the five-day trip, aimed to give the buyers an insight into new hotels,
venues and attractions.

The tourism boards will
highlight other major events taking place in the capital over the next 18
months, including the Royal Wedding and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. 

There will be a networking day at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel
before the buyers go to visit other regions of the UK, 1
March.

Head of
Business visits and Events, VisitBritain, Simon Mills
, said: “There has never
been a better time to showcase the
magnificent destinations, venues and suppliers available across the entire event
industry in Britain.”

Development Europe for Visit London
Barbara Jamison, added that the eyes of the world would be on London during the
Olympics: “and therefore it is incredibly important that we are able to showcase
just how many outstanding venues and hotels we have to offer the events and
meetings industry through this
programme”.

The Discovery 2011
programme includes workshops,
networking events and a series of dinners throughout the country. The
international buyers will also make appointments at International Confex at Earls
Court next
week.
