Foster and Partners named final SECC anniversary ‘champions’

Foster and Partners, the
architect behind the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre’s (SECC) Clyde
Auditorium, has been crowned the final member of the 25th anniversary
‘Champions’ by the venue’s management.

The
SECC
says the award is in recognition of the “significant contribution” the
architects have made to the past success of the venue. Work is soon set to start
on Foster and Partner’s latest design for the SECC, its new Scottish National
Arena.

SECC CEO John Sharkey, who presented the
award at the venue’s recent Burns Supper event in London, said: “As our 25th
anniversary celebrations draw to a close, we can’t think of a more deserving
winner of this award. Foster and Partners have undoubtedly created an icon for
the SECC, Glasgow
and Scotland
that has fondly become known as the Armadillo. The building’s design and
facilities have been fundamental to us attracting thousands of events,
exhibitions and conferences over the years and in positioning the venue and
Glasgow as the
UK’s
largest integrated venue.”

Mike Jelliffe of Foster and Partners said his
company was looking forward “to creating a dynamic venue that will attract large
scale sporting and entertainment events to the
city”.
