NewcastleGateshead hotel occupancy up two per cent

Hotel occupancy in NewcastleGateshead rose this summer, with June, July and August 2010 statistics showing an average of 78 per cent of hotel rooms occupied in the city centre and quayside areas.

This figure represents a two per cent increase on the same summer period in 2009.

In addition, September 2010 saw 83 per cent of the city centre and quayside hotel rooms occupied, the highest September occupancy rate for five years, a boost NewcastleGateshead puts down to the 30th anniversary of the Great North Run.

Sarah Stewart, interim chief executive at destination marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative, says: “This is a timely indication that despite the inevitable impact of the economic spending review, it’s not all doom and gloom.

“The hotel sector is demonstrating a sense of optimism and renewed confidence in the area with the ongoing development of four major new venues, including a new Jurys Inn on Gateshead Quays, Sleeperz on Westgate Road, Hotel Indigo on Fenkle Street and Sandman Signature Hotel opposite St James’ Park.”
