Cheltenham MP calls for new conference centre

Writing for thisisgloucestershire.co.uk, Liberal Democrat MP Martin Horwood has called for a new conference centre in Cheltenham.

Horwood
says that although the city has a
number of existing venues to host its annual festivals and events,
“what we don’t have is a creative centre, a hub, for all our creative and
performing arts”.

He adds: “A
modern community venue could help to earn its keep as a business and day conference
venue”. Horwood has proposed the
redevelopment of several existing sites, including the quadrangle next to the Town
Hall or the Odeon.

The MP says
he raised the issue in
the local online medium to “test support” and “start a debate”.

One reader, Mark McKergow, posted some quick support: “I think this is an
excellent idea which could radically improve the arts and cultural scene in
Cheltenham. We certainly need a decent venue
for films and other events.

“Creating a
modern arts/film hub alongside, and even integrated with, the town hall would
really make Imperial
Square even more of a focal point for the town
outside the existing festivals as well as during them,” he added.
