London goes head to head with Edinburgh Fringe

Visit London is backing The London Festival Fringe which is to
go head to head with Edinburgh’s
Fringe Festival next year.

The London Festival Fringe is to take place 6-30 August
2010 at various venues across the capital. Organisers say they aim to sign up
100 venues by next summer and are holding discussions with leading London theatres,
including the Almeida, Gate, Bush and Hackney Empire.

A Visit London spokesperson says: “Obviously London offers a unique
setting with many places able to host all year round events of this nature.

“The city already hosts a number of similar events, but
there is always scope for an event such as this, and we fully support it.”

Edinburgh Festival Fringe organisers say they are “relaxed”
about the proposed London
launch.

“We have just had the best year ever, and we are the
pre-eminent open-access arts festival in the world.

“It’s no surprise that other cities would seek to copy the
model, and we would welcome anyone into the festival community,” says Edinburgh
Fringe’s Neil Mackinnon.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an arts festival featuring
theatre, comedy, music, dance and exhibitions.
