In the week prior to the London 2012 Olympics, Glasgow will host the International Convention on Science Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS). Organiser Congrex claims the convention is the world’s greatest sports science conference and will attract 3,000 delegates from across the globe.
The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre will be the venue for the event that is styling itself as as the Pre Olympic Convention.
The bid to host ICSEMIS 2012 was truly UK wide and presented by the Brunel 2012 Consortium, which includes:
- Brunel University, coordinator of the bid
- Liverpool John Moores University
- University of Strathclyde
- University of Ulster
- University of Cardiff
- Glasgow City Marketing Bureau
- Congrex UK
The Brunel Consortium bid last year in China, just before the Beijing Olympics, and the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) signed the host agreement in Glasgow in October.
Professor Celia Brackenridge, Chair of ICSEMIS 2012 Local Organising Committee, says: “As a bid team we were always committed to spreading the benefits of the London Games to other parts of the UK and this is what we now plan to do.”
Congrex regional business development director Caroline Mackenzie says Congrex UK is delighted to be appointed as the organiser partner of choice to be part of the consortium. “Congrex will do everything that is necessary in the planning and delivery stages to make this a tremendously successful convention in 2012.”
London Mayor Boris Johnson, meanwhile, has announced that London will be hosting SportAccord 2011, a major international convention at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, a significant piece of business for the new hotel venue due to open in spring 2010.
