York pulls over Carfree Cities

The Towards Carfree Cities conference will be
held for the first time in its 13-year history in the UK in
2010.
Organiser, World Carfree Network, brings the annual event to York’s Priory Street Centre from 28 June to 1
July, following a successful bid from
local campaigners, Carfree UK.
Up to 200
international and local academics, city planners and activists
are expected to attend.

Coordinator of Carfree UK, Steve Melia, says: “Car-free neighbourhoods
are moving up the agenda in the UK, with the launch of the new carfree
association for London, and increasing interest from government.”

A ‘public day’ will be held for York residents during the
conference with keynote speakers.

Previous conferences have taken place in Lyon, Berlin, Istanbul and the Colombian
capital Bogotá.
