New £4m conference centre plan for Windermere

English Lakes Hotels has
confirmed plans for a new £4 million convention centre on the shores of
Lake Windermere.

The company plans to build
Cumbria’s largest event venue
next to the Low Wood Hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere, one of four hotels
run by the group in the Lake District.

An innovative heating system will use
ground source heat pumps located in the lake to create thermal energy for
heating the rooms in the new building.  The heat pumps will be run on
electricity generated from solar panels located on the roof
structure.

Other measures include lights fitted
with daylight and movement sensors to minimise energy consumption and light
pollution.

English Lakes Hotels hopes to open
the Windermere
Convention
Centre in 2012.  It is expected to create five extra full time
jobs and 30 part time jobs. There are currently nine meeting rooms at the hotel,
the largest accommodating 340 guests in a theatre-style layout.

English Lakes Hotels’ director Tim
Berry says: “Many businesses and organisations have already staged their events
at the Low Wood but this new centre will enable us to bring national and
international conferences, events and functions to the most beautiful part of
the country.  It will position the hotel, and indeed the South Lakes as a major provider of a world class
conference and exhibition centre.”
