Eventia moves its awards

Industry trade association Eventia has put out a
statement claiming it “has listened to its members and industry leaders” and
moved its awards, previously announced for February 2010, back to
November.

The event
had been set to clash with the M&IT awards, originally scheduled to run just
10 days before them. Venue and destination categories had also been added,
putting the events effectively head-to-head.

The
Eventia Awards were to have taken place on 12 February 2010 at the Wyndham
Grand, Chelsea
Harbour.

Eventia chief executive Izania Downie announced the plans had been
scrapped following a canvassing of members who “preferred to move the event to
November”, when the UK side of Eventia’s awards
traditionally took place.

M&IT managing editor Martin Lewis, had claimed his
event’s charity interests had been put under threat by the potential split in
attendance and sponsorship. Eventia had, he said, “taken a long time to get the
right decision – but it is extremely welcome. I now hope that this spirit of
openness and transparency will extend to all Eventia’s dealings with third
parties”.

According to a web posting by industry
veteran Peter Rand, Eventia had been in danger of compromising its independence,
credibility and support from the industry. “It appears that decisions are being
driven by their publication partner; the date to fit in with their schedule and
the introduction of additional award categories.”
