Birmingham is to be the host city for the 160-strong US athletics team for the London Olympics in 2012.
The team will arrive in the city to start training one month before the start of the games and will remain there throughout the competition.
Marketing Birmingham’s commercial director Ian Taylor says The US athletics deal will be worth around £9 million for the city’s local economy.
“We’re delighted to welcome the US athletics team to Birmingham. It is great news that the city will
host these talented athletes ahead of the Olympics and further enhances Birmingham’s sporting credentials. Birmingham has staged more major sporting events than any other UK city and was the first city to be awarded the title National City of Sport. Birmingham is an ideal host city for the two teams,” he says.
Birmingham is also one of 16 cities vying to be selected as host city for the official England World Cup in 2018.
