New chair at Carlisle Conference Group

After 11 years, Carlisle Conference Group has welcomed a new chair. Paul Hicks, general manager of the Crown Hotel, Wetheral, has handed the reins over to John Baker (pictured), MD of Carlisle Racecourse.

Baker takes over in what he describes as “an exciting time for Carlisle”.

The city has just seen a £1m investment in the Hallmark hotel, which can host 240 for conferences, and this month the city welcomes a major outdoor event as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

“At my own Racecourse venue we are about to embark in a £2.5m project that includes the provision of new conference and hospitality facilities. With the Carlisle Renaissance project ongoing, our great transport links and on the back of a hugely successful Easter for visitor numbers for Carlisle, I am really looking forward to taking the Conference Group forward to maximise all the excellent business tourism opportunities that the City has to offer.”

Conference Group officer Stephen Carruthers, says: “In addition to thanking Paul for all the time he has given to the role, it is with great pleasure that I welcome John into the chair. He brings with him a vast amount of experience that all our members will benefit from – I am looking forward to working with him.”
