Princess Royal in Eastbourne

The Princess Royal paid a visit to the Royal British Legion Women’s Section Conference being held at the Devonshire Park Centre, in Eastbourne, 22 April.

The annual conference is in its 87th year and HRH Princess Anne is president of the Legion’s Women’s Section. The Princess Royal addressed the 1,600 delegates and presented awards on day two of the three.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said the town was “very pleased to be hosting this prestigious conference and welcomes Princess Anne to our seaside resort. Attracting such large delegate numbers and a visit from a Royal is fantastic news for the town’s status as a premier conference destination”.

The two-day conference has filled the Devonshire Park Centre and organisers had to deal with 100 delegates more than the 1,500 originally planned. The Women’s Sector Conference alternates usually from a northern destination one year, to the south the next.

The Women’s Section event is the first of two Royal British Legion Conferences taking place in Eastbourne in 2009, with the Royal British Legion Conference coming to the town,15-17 May.

Both are brand new events for Eastbourne and come during the resort’s best ever year for conferences.

Between now and the end of May, delegates are booking up to 32,000 bednights in the town and the busy schedule is positive news for Eastbourne’s accommodation providers during an unstable economic climate.

Eastbourne now offers additional exhibition space for conferences at The Towner Gallery.
