ADNEC keeps appetite for acquisitions

Conference-news asked ADNEC Group CEO Simon Horgan whether more were planned and he replied: “Yes, several. Many opportunities are presenting themselves across the whole industry, I see them everywhere and we remain committed to the ‘network’. We will continue to acquire centres and find ways to enhance and develop them. But it is all about what the end user wants – Excel is a test of this.”

The ADNEC facility in Abu Dhabi has just staged the biggest ever gathering of meetings industry professionals in the Gulf, the third edition of GIBTM. Horgan says the venue staged 73 events in 2008 and already has 75 scheduled for 2009.

To put this into perspective, Abu Dhabi staged 14 events in 2006, before the new facilities were built.

“By completing the first phase of our Marina Zone, we have also increased the scope of events we are able to attract and are now one of a handful of venues in the world capable of staging indoor, outdoor and marine events simultaneously (Excel London is another),” says Horgan.

“Right now in the UK there is too much exhibition space; why then are we building more space at Excel?” he asks. “We are anticipating that other venues will reduce capacity and we are preparing ourselves to meet the demand and supply a venue with the flexibility to host all events.”
