Fair-trade factory for Nexus

UK conference bag supplier Nexus Collections is finding that looking after its Chinese workforce is paying dividends, with 500,000 bags produced in the past nine months and a turnover of US$2m at its new factory on the Pearl River Delta.

Nexus claims to be the leading producer of environmentally friendly conference bags and its new factory, open since May, means Nexus can ensure quality control and incentivise its workforce instead of relying on third party suppliers.

Cheshire-based MD Nick Jones says the facility heralds the start of a new era for Nexus. “While the creation of our own factory represents a substantial investment, we firmly believe it will dramatically improve our business and above all increase our customer service levels.”

“The use of third party manufacturers occasionally created limitations on the service levels we wanted to strive for. Owning and managing our own facility will allow us to control the whole process which enables us to even more rapidly respond to client needs.”

Previously, Jones says he was unable to affect staff working conditions and environmental issues in suppliers’ factories. The development of the company’s own 50,000 square feet facility in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, on the northeast Pearl River Delta,.has meant a leap in wages for the 300 staff to 15 per cent above local competitors.

The Huizhou factory boasts a games room, internet access at work, canteen and even away days for workers and their families.

“At the beginning the staff were unsure whether they could trust our promises,” says Jones. “However, now that we have delivered, there has been a noticeable response from the staff. We are also receiving requests from many more workers to join us.”

The Huizhou factory is owned by a partnership between Jones and a Chinese business partner. The company, Nexus Collections (Hong Kong Limited), is the sole manufacturer of the Nexus brand for world-wide distribution.

Jones tells conference-news.co.uk: “The new factory heralds the start of a new era for Nexus Collections, allowing us to grow on a worldwide scale. We now have total control over the whole production process, ensuring both quality of product and quality of life for our staff. No-matter how much we continue to grow, our attitude to both our workforce and the environment will not change and we remain totally committed to CSR and fair-trade.”
