London to host 2011 UEFA Champions League Final

Football’s governing body in Europe UEFA has given London the 2011 UEFA Champions’ League Final. In the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Final should provide “a great opportunity to showcase the capital and its ability to host major sporting events”, says VL Interim CEO Sally Chatterjee.

The event, held last May at the Luzhniki Stadium, in Moscow, Russia, will be staged at Wembley Stadium which fought off competition from the Munich’s Allianz Arena and Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

Visit London’s Events for London team worked closely on the bid process with the FA and Wembley Stadium.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said of the announcement: “It is splendid news that London is to host the UEFA Champions League Final in 2011. There is a huge sense of excitement and passion in London for sports and indeed for the ’beautiful game’ of football. London is delighted to have been successful in the bid to host the 2011 Final and Wembley is a suitably dramatic and superb backdrop for the event.”
